Fool's Paradise - N.N

Poet’s Corner

“Give me some rum”

Says the sailor man,

With breath that sends shivers,

And boots filled with sand.

I give him some rum,

To this sailor man,

Whose breath sends shivers,

Whose boots filled with sand.

He drinks up his rum,

This sailor man,

And breathes, sending shivers,

Stands, with boots filled wi’ sand.

No pay, but thanked for the rum,

This sailor man,

With breath sending shivers,

Out he goes, ‘Yo rum, so drum’

Wi’ sand in boots.

The Tale of a Princess

Princess Kashila was pretty and young,

Yet, she said ‘no’ to everyone.

Then her father got mad and wed her to a leper,

Who she found out was a dreadful beggar.

Naught to be done she had to go,

With that leper whose name was Joe.

She removed her rich robes and wore a rag,

To match her husband who carried a bag.

Pensive as she was, little did she know,

That this man was really the rich prince Joe,

Dressed like a leper

To represent a beggar,

To make her see,

Her stupidity.

The truth found, both live happy ever after,

Their palace was filled with smiles and laughter,

They were happy forever more,

And it should and shall always be so.

Always Yours (continued)

Jaqy took in the words silently. Her dreamy black eyes searched for comfort among the stars. Maggy looked at her sister with concern. “It’s evident, Jaqy. He’s coming back for you.” Jaqy heard every word Margret said. There was truth in it.

That night she could not sleep well. Jaqy tossed about in bed, her mind being haunted by what happened the other day. Cavin had come purposely to see her. He knew that she still came to Golden Ball gym. It was the place where she and Cavin spent hours together. Jaqy had a special affection for this place, and came there with her friends. She knew Cavin would meet her there if he wanted to. That was a request he asked of her at their parting ten years ago. Their meeting took Jaqy by surprise. She was knocked off her guard and was made to meet him tomorrow night. She saw that Cavin had not changed, not even a bit. His easy-going attitude had made her comfortable, but she could remember only scraps and bits of the conversation. He spoke of himself, his job and his son, but it was his parting look that made Jaqy shake. She felt those turquoise eyes pierce into her in search of her ‘bitter truth’. For a moment it melted her, but she regained her strength. She would deal with Cavin her way. She had suffered heart ache for long enough; she would not get hurt this time, nor will she forgive him. Jaqy knew her place, but she wanted to meet Cavin. She still had things to know from him. Her eyes narrowed, turning her face into a deep frown. There are things she had to know.

When Jaqy’s mother got to know about her daughter’s meeting with Cavin, she was troubled. She loved Cavin, but she loved her daughter more. Silently, she watched Jaqy as much as she could.

Jaqy normally got to her office very early. Maggy came after attending to the baby. When Jaqy arrived, her staff normally greeted her, then her secretary and manager met her privately in the office. But today her manager was in a hurry and pulled her aside.

“What’s the matter, Lowel?” Jaqy asked when they were alone. She was annoyed. “Sorry Miss Kauffman, it’s about a client.” Lowel was a middle aged, well experienced man, but it was Jaqy’s advice he always sought when trouble cropped up. “He is an Indian professor, and complains about the meals” Lowel finished. He looked at Jaqy’s face, a bit wary today.

“Ask him to meet me,” Jaqy told Lowel. “I’ll be in my office.”

“I’ll do that” and went Lowel in search of the troublesome Indian. Ever since the professor saw Lowe, they hated each other. The professor had complained, but nothing was done and he somehow knew or thought that the manager was up to no good. So when he was told that Miss Kauffman, would be pleased to have him in her office to discuss the problem, he felt very satisfied. The fuss was about ‘no Indian food’ on the menu.

“Sorry sir, this is the best we can do.” Jaqy said. She truly pitied the man.

“Thisfood is not seeming to agree with my inner system; I have come on important matters. I wish to have things more agreeable. For the sake of Brahma, import some Indian cooks if you have to!”

“Indian cooks…” Jaqy was thinking. “You wish for Indian food, here… on our menu” her thoughts ran fast, she smiled. “My friend, I’ll give you the food,” she rose, shaking his hand. “if you’ll give me the cooks.”
