Fool's Paradise - N.N

A Taste of Life – A Flight

Last week we dropped at the fight school in Wisconsin and there we had a free flight with one of the students. Well, this tiny plane could accommodate only two passengers – the pilot and me. Off we go up in the air! The camera men and our crew were far down there. I could see in the runway track. We leave them behind and fly into open paradise. “Oh heavenly firmament! Here we come!” the sky was so blue and clear that we could almost touch it. Everywhere it was peace and tranquility. Only the sound of our engine buzzed the air. I could trace some things from here, far down there – that maze of shining ribbons. Oh! That’s the airport! Ok… that shining road... oh! No road, that’s a river. And those must be houses. We fly around and and the pilot tells me that this plane has a “Variable Pitch” (where the propeller can turn and bite more chunks of air) and “Retractable Undercarriage”. (I forgot to ask what that means). So ended our mission.

The Man Who Died While Travelling To Mars

The time has come

For me to go to mars,

I held my window bars,

I got my space suit

My perfume ‘Brute’

And up into the air I went

The rocket bent

It soon bursted,

Only for a second I lasted

I was consumed by the flames

It is all games

For the people,

Interested in research,

And not caring for our lives.

Oh when will this labyrinth end?

It is only a maze of finding,

And no care for our lives.

Always Yours (continued)

December was the coming month. It was a month of touch work at the Holiday Apartments. The Christmas and New Year were occasions that demanded a lot of planning. The best has to be there for the guests. Jaqy went around giving orders.

“Lowel, where would the Christmas tree stand this year?” Jaqy asked her manager between the rounds.

“I think it should be out in the park.” Lowel replied.

“Out in the park! Goodness… what can you mean!!”

“It’s a change to the normal arrangements,” Lowel explained, “… we’ll have a piano and the decors in the lobby, and put a giant tree out… that attracts the eye!”

Jaqy couldn’t help laughing, “You are working wonders here! What about a Santa Clause?” she wanted to know.

“Oh… we’ll find one,” Lowel grinned. His thick moustache hiding his mouth. He had taken the role of Santa at one time, when the Christmas planes had jammed; not that he enjoyed the character that is. He had no intention of wearing the red suit again.

Jaqy returned to her office. There were bills to settle, wages to pay and a lot of dealings to look into. She picked her pen and began. The rapid movement of her hand made the green heart on the bracelet dance, turning her gaze to it. This was a very special gift from Cavin. It was one he planned and worked long for. For nearly one year, he had collected the empty drink bottles that they both shared. Then he had bought the bracelet from the money he got by selling the bottles. He had given it on her birthday. He had said it was ‘hard earned for true love’. Jaqy still treasured this, along with its history that brought memories of the past.

She began to write again, but was disturbed by a knock at the door. In walked her brother-in-law, Hyden, looking excited and worried.

“I have to speak with…” Hyden said, fumbling about with his hands.

“Something about the accounts?” Jaqy looked up from her work placing all attention on Maggy’s husband. He was a tall, young man, reaching his mid thirties. Intelligent, yet very nervous and emotional. He had loved Maggy and married her. He was devoted to her. They were what you call a happy couple. In the business, he was chief accountant and of great help in that angle.

“It’s a personal matter,” he began but waited for Jaqy to accustom herself. He could have spoken to her at home, but he wanted privacy.

“On what?” Jaqy asked.

“About Maggy. She is expecting,” he said.

“Are you sure?” Jaqy felt awkward, “She didn’t tell me. Why? Oh Maggy! Too good to be true!”

“Because… because…. I don’t know. We can’t have a baby. I cannot afford to raise two children. I want the best for Maggy that’s all.”

“Wait a second,” Jaqy cut in, “Can’t we afford another child? Are the accounts so bad?”

“I myself am broke!” Hyden confessed with a raise of his shoulders. Jaqy got the point. “Of course, I’ll see to it.” She thought for a moment, “Would you begin today on the financial dealings regarding the New Project? Make separate books under the heading – “Luxury Apartments”.

“I’ll do that,” Hyden smiled. He admired Jaqy’s way of thinking. It was quick. She could read his mind. He liked her style in business. But that was not what he wanted for his wife. He would like her to be a plain and pleasant housewife, to wait on him, raise their children, to make a home. He did not want her to slave for a business, especially now, in her condition. He never married her with eyes on the business, now he was tied to it all. He had discussed this with Maggy, but there was no use of that. He dreaded that this might bring in a distance between them. He didn’t want that. He will take over the new project.

“I’ll ask Lowel to give you the bank statements on this,” his sister in law added, then watched him go.
