Always Yours (continued)

Jaqy drove at a steady pace. She wanted to speak to Cavin. He was the only person in this whole world that would understand her in the right way. When she was with him, it was the happiest moments. She had never met another as Cavin. There were many young men in her circle of associates, but non like Cavin. Jaqy could not help sighing. She loved Cavin and here he was with open arms calling for her, yet her pride and adamant character kept her away from his reach.

There was no use of doubting Cavin. Jaqy knew that he had truly loved her always. It was their last year in high school that they both fell in love, and it was a strong affection based on common interests and solid foundation. Even then, Cavin’s affair with Dian was widely known even though it was no more. After Dian, Cavin had been interested in Jaqy, and it was Maggy that first introduced them to each other. Maggy had been a very good friend of Cavin’s every since. Even when Cavin left for the States to Dian, Maggy had close connections with him. They had written to each other. Cavin had written to Maggy because he wanted to keep in touch, but Jaqy would not do that. So, he had always been close with Maggy through both good and bad times. maggy had never blamed Cavin, she had come to know there was some reason for his leaving Jaqy to marry Dian.

Jaqy wiped her windscreen from inside. It had created a foggy surface. Turning the corner, Jaqy regained speed, then stopped at the third house. She parked, then watched for a moment before walking to the door. She could not hear any sounds inside the house, except for the television. Without any hesitation, Jaqy pressed the doorbell and the next moment Cavin was standing there, with the door open.

“Jaqy?” he was rather surprised for she was the last person he expected to see there. “Are you ok?”

Jaqy raised her shoulders and her lips gave a slight smile, “Can I come in?”

“Sure…” Cavin gave way, but he did not have the slightest idea why she had come.

“I came to talk..” Jaqy explained as if she had read his mind, “I need to know some things.” Cavin followed her and set himself opposite her in the other chair. “About what?” he asked, “if you came here to dig up the past…” Jaqy did not let him continue.

“Why did you wait six months knowing very well Dian was carrying your baby?” Jaqy asked in a very low and quiet tone. Cavin was quiet. He had done so because he was in a dilemma and Jaqy had heard his reasons, but she is yet unsatisfied. Instead he said,

“Jaqy, Dian is history.”

“You have always said that!” Jaqy was getting worked up.

“I broke up with Dian years before meeting you. It was you that I cared for.”

“Then how did she end up carrying your child?” Jaqy questioned, “how can you explain that?”

“I have gone through this a hundred times, and the result is still the same. We only get hurt.” Cavin got up, “Dian was dying, she needed me to help raise the child.”

“Absurd!” Jaqy voiced, but she knew this was the truth. During the pregnancy checkups, cancer was diagnosed, and Dian was sure of dying. Cavin had gone to help her face it. Jaqy saw that Cavin was upset and she felt bad at having hurt him so she changed the subject.

“Where is David?”

“Off for Christmas at his grandmother’s,” Cavin looked at Jaqy. He was glad she had stopped repeating the past. “Want a drink?”

Jaqy hesitated, but later agreed. She watched Cavin go into the kitchen, then she switched on the television and ran through the channels. Finding nothing interesting she switched it off.
